I think that Jon is the most stereotypical character, as well as one of the most boring. He experiences some pretty funny stuff (Dolorous Edd, Tormund Giantsbane), as well as seeing a lot of interesting things going on beyond the Wall. But nothing that he himself says or thinks (as far as we're allowed to see) is particularly clever, either in a witty or an intelligent way. His conversation with Ygritte in the cave was right out of a dimestore romance novel.
Even though he's a good fighter and leader in battle, that doesn't make him intelligent. Sam got him the position as LC. Jon doesn't seem deeply conflicted about anything since he's good and arrogant at the same time. His feelings seem about as deep as the occasional, "damn, I'm a bastard". When he talks to Maester Aemon about family vs. the Black, Aemon's feelings and emotions seemed to me to be much deeper and stronger than Jon's, even though his choices had been made years ago.
Everything about Jon- finding Ghost, killing Halfhand, Ygritte's death- has just seemed completely staged fantasy drama to me and completely predictable, whereas most the rest of aSoIaF has been unpredictable with several amazing characters and non-typical plotlines.
It will ruin the series for me if Jon becomes the PtwP or AA or the HERO. (R+L=J would be fine, as long as it didn't make him the HERO). One of the things that I've liked so far about aSoIaF has been that things don't happen just because they've been prophecied or in the way that everyone thought they would, and not raising Jon up to HERO status would continue that realism. So I hope that he just fades away.
